Why doesn't my email show up in the archive?
Mail is not archived immediately. Be patient, it will (probably) show up
eventually. Sometimes, it never shows up and the archives need to get rebuilt. If this happens,
fill out a help ticket.
Why was my email rejected for being too big?
Currently, the maximum list email size is set to 300k, which we feel is more than enough. Big attachments consume lots of computer resources for little benefit. They are rude to people who are forced to download them, and most often the large attachment is not needed by the wholelist. Please use shared web documents instead.
Why was my email sent to the moderator for approval and/or rejected?
There are several possible reasons for this.
- I am not subscribed to the list.
- I am subscribed to the list (that is, you are receiving messages from the list), but my posts are referred to the moderator.
- The admin of the list may not allow members to post without moderator approval. If you think this should change, send an email to listname-admin@lists.riseup.net and ask your admin to change it.
- You may be receiving your emails at one address and sending them from another. For example, lets say you have email1@riseup.net, but you also have email2@gmail.com. Email1 is subscribed to the list, but email2 is not. If you send an email FROM email2 to the list, it will be held for moderator approval. To fix this: Subscribe your second email address. Now switch your second email address to no mail mode. You will only receive email at the first address, but you can post from both!
How do I contact a list owner or editor?
To contact the list owners, send mail to
listname-admin@lists.riseup.net. To contact the list editors/moderators, send mail to
listname-editor@lists.riseup.net
How do I send HTML mail?
It is possible to send HTML mail to riseup.net lists. But first, we ask you that you reconsider sending formatted (aka HTML) messages to a mailing list.
If, for some unexplainable reason, you still insist on sending HTML email to a mailing list, this is how you do it:
- Compose the message in a mail client, such as Thunderbird, which supports sending HTML email.
- In Thunderbird, you may need to enable this option under Edit > Account Settings > Composition and Addressing.
- Send the message from your mail client to the list address.
That is it. It will
not work to paste HTML fragments into your normal email or to paste HTML into the web based "Post Message" page.
Why don't I receive a copy of the emails that I post to the list?
There are two possible reasons for this. You may have your subscription options for the list set to not receive copies of your own posts. To find out:
- Go to https://lists.riseup.net/
- Login with your email and password
- Click on "Your subscriptions"
- Click on the list at issue
- Select "Options" on the left side of the screen
- Make sure that your reception mode is set to "Normal" and not set to "Not_me"
If you are still not receiving copies of your own posts, you may have a gmail account. Gmail thinks it is clever by not showing you posts that you make. We can't do anything about this, you have to check with Gmail to fix that problem. If you're still having trouble, fill out a help ticket.
Why is my email to a riseup list being blocked as "Spam"?
A recent study has shown that over 95% of the email traffic on the internet is spam! Yes, 95%! For you and me, it is just a nuisance, but for riseup's poor servers, it's a huge hassle. Riseup has deployed a number of
tools to combat spam and sometimes a legitimate user's email will be incorrectly identified as spam. Before contacting us, please review the steps listed here to see if you can resolve the problem.
First, let's identify the problem. If your mail is being bounced by riseup, our servers will give a reason for the bounce. Look at the bounce message and compare it to our sample messages below. If you find a match, try the steps listed before contacting us.

Riseup uses
Spamassassin to help us fight spam. There are a number of rules that Spamassassin uses to determine if incoming mail is spam.
Check
this page to see if you, or your ISP, can resolve the issue on your end before you contact us to report this issue.
My mail server has "bad MX records"
Connected to 204.13.164.19 but sender was rejected. Remote host said: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Sender address EXAMPLE@EXAMPLE.NET blocked using bogusmx.rfc-ignorant.org; Domain has demonstrably bogus MX records
MX records define servers that are authorized to send mail. Some ISPs do not configure their DNS records correctly, and this leads to lots of problems. If you are receiving this error, please contact your ISP and tell them to look at
this page.
