What every email user should know

    Edit your settings

You can change many of you riseup.net email account settings by visiting mail.riseup.net and clicking "Change my settings." From here you can change your password, change your email address, add aliases or forwards, close your account, and edit your personal information. It is our preference that you remove all your personally identifying information.
    Certificates

In order to use secure connections, you must add cacert.org as a Certificate Authority recognized by your web browser or mail client. For more information, and step by step instructions, visit our certificates page.

    Trash Folder

All mail older than three weeks in the Trash folder is deleted automatically. This does not apply to you if you use POP and do not use the server side folders.
    Sent Folder

All mail older than 3 months in the Sent folder is deleted automatically. This does not apply to you if you use POP and do not use the server side folders.
    Quota

Quota is the amount of disk storage you are allowed on the mail server. If you use POP, you don't probably don't need to worry about quota. Items in your Trash folder do not count toward quota.
    Mail Clients

We suggest that everyone use a POP or IMAP mail client, if possible. See our Mail Clients pages for recommendations and step by step tutorials on how to configure your mail client.

    Use Firefox!

    Get Firefox

We consider Internet Explorer (IE) to be a broken web browser: it is buggy, insecure, and is proprietary software owned by an evil corporation bent on world domination. People often have difficulty using riseup.net's web based mail interface with IE. Happily, there is an awesome alternative: Firefox. It is Free Software (or Software Libre, which means it is part of the digital commons), fast, and is far superior to IE. Download firefox today!.

    Use Thunderbird!

    Get Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a mail client which you install on your computer. It is a dedicated program for managing your email and is the way that we recommend for checking your riseup.net mail account.

Thunderbird has many features, including: IMAP and POP support, multiple accounts, quick search, spell as you type, advanced spam controls, RSS, virtual folder views, message filtering, addressbook, and support for GPG encryption.

Best of all, Thunderbird is Free Software (or Software Libre, which means it is part of the digital commons).

See our Thunderbird tutorials for help on setting up Thunderbird to work with riseup.net.
